About Nakhon Sawan

Nakhon Sawan is a medium sized town in the far south of Thailand’s Northern Region. The town is located where the Nan and Ping Rivers meet to form the Chao Phraya River which flows through Ayutthaya and Bangkok. Before the 20th Century rivers where the major transport routes in Thailand and this made Nakhon Sawan an important trading centre. Nakhon Sawan is not a town which attracts many tourists. Most of the hotels cater primarily to Thai people travelling for work or business, and the town’s restaurants and bars predominantly serve local customers. You won’t find many menus in English in the restaurants and relatively few people working in the town speak English compared to other popular tourist destinations such as Chiang Mai.

The town of Nakhon Sawan has two main places of interest to visit. One of these is the town centre park, called Paradise Park. Paradise Park is 1.3 km long by 500 metres wide with a large lake in the middle. Paradise Park is very popular with local people who go to the park in the mornings and early evenings to use the running track around the lake and the free outdoor gym at the eastern end of park. The other notable feature of Nakhon Sawan town is Wat Khiriwong, which encompasses a hill at the top of which is a striking golden pagoda called the Phra Chulamanee Chedi. It is worth going up to the Phra Chulamanee Chedi as the views from hill across the otherwise flat landscape are very good.
