About Travel to Siem Reap

After Phnom Penh, Siem Reap is the second largest city in Cambodia and also the second most visited tourist destination, particularly for foreign leisure travellers. The reason so many people come to Siem Reap is that the Angkor Archaeological Park is located 5 km by road to the north of the city.

Siem Reap City

Siem Reap is in many respects one of the easiest cities in Cambodia for foreign tourists to visit. The city has an airport and a large number of bus and minivan operators, and it’s fairly close to the border with Thailand, making travel to and from Siem Reap much easier than visiting destinations such as Kampot.

Siem Reap also has a very developed tourist infrastructure that provides a wide variety of choices to visitors. The city has lots of cheap places to eat and drink, as well as hotels and hostels for as little as $10 USD a night. Siem Reap, however, also offers luxurious accommodation which can cost $300 to $400 USD a night in period properties such as the Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor.

Siem Reap also has nightlife. The main nightlife area is Pub Street which is sometimes compared to the Khao San Road in Bangkok. This comparison is partly correct. Pub Street has a cluster of bars and eateries which cater primarily to international visitors. One big difference though is that Siem Reap attracts a higher proportion of older visitors and this is reflected in ages of the customers who frequent Pub Street.

Angkor Archaeological Park

It’s not cheap to visit the Angkor Archaeological Park in the same way that it is to visit most other historical attractions in South East Asia, such as Ayutthaya Historical Park in Thailand where visitors are charged less than $2 USD per temple. Foreign visitors to the Angkor Archaeological Park need to pay a relatively high entrance fee, and on top of that they need to pay for private transport to get around the park, and possibly a further amount for a guide to explain what they are seeing in the park.

  • Entrance Fee: $37 USD for a single day, $62 USD for three days, and $72 USD for a week per person.
  • Transport: Tuk-tuk ($15 to $20 USD a day), Taxi ($30 to $40 USD a day).
  • Guide: Around $25 USD a day.
Kampong Phluk Floating Village

A popular excursion from Siem Reap is to take a boat trip on the Tanas River to see a series of villages with houses built on stilts in the river. The communities which live in these villages supplement their earning from fishing and farming with income from visitors taking boat tours. In addition to seeing the villages tourists can also explore a mangrove forest and venture by boat to the edges of the massive Tonle Sap Lake.

The starting point for boat tours is located 31 km by road from Siem Reap.

  • Organised Tours: $35 to $50 USD per person.
Phnom Kulen

Phnom Kulen is a small cluster of hills located 60 km by road from Siem Reap. Phnom Kulen is a place of great historical significance to Cambodian people. It was the location of the capital of the Khmer people before Angkor Wat and the place where the Khmer King King Jayavarman II declared independence in 802.

The highlights of Phnom Kulen are its 16th Century temple, river bed with 1,000 year old carvings, and a waterfall with a pool where local people like to come to swim and picnic.

Lotus Silk Farm

Located 10 km by road from Siem Reap, Lotus Silk Farm is a commercial lotus farm and textile producer. The production of silk-like material from lotus stems is a laborious and complex process and the resulting products are relatively expensive. Popular items to purchase include scarves made from lotus silk, which can cost $500 USD or more per scarf. It doesn’t cost anything, however, to visit and join a guided tour of the facility. The farm also has a cafe which has very pleasant views across the lotus fields.
