Phi Phi Islands

The term Koh Phi Phi is used interchangeably to refer to a cluster of 6 islands or, as is more often the case, to refer to only the largest of those 6 islands, which is Koh Phi Phi Don.

Only Koh Phi Phi Don is inhabited. The next largest island is Koh Phi Phi Leh which is famous for Maya Bay where parts of ‘The Beach’ were filmed. The next largest islands after that are Koh Mai Phai and Koh Yung. Both of which have a single beach and not much else. The two smallest of the 6 islands in Phi Phi Archipelago are Bida Nok and Bida Nai, which are very small steep-sided islands, both of which are popular scuba diving sites.

Koh Phi Phi Don is the only one of the 6 islands with any tourist accommodation, or other facilities such as restaurants. The island itself is relatively small. 7.8 km long by 3.6 km at its widest point, with an estimated 2,000 to 3,000 permanent residents. The island typically receives around 1.5 million leisure travellers per year, and even during the low season the number of tourists massively outnumbers the local population. This is particularly so in Tonsai Village where the majority of the visitors to Koh Phi Phi Don stay.

Tonsai Village

Koh Phi Phi’s main long distance ferry pier is Tonsai Pier, which is located on the south side of Tonsai Village. It’s the main entry point for travel to the islands and it’s also where the majority of the accommodation is located.

Tonsai Village isn’t very large. It’s located mostly on a thin strip of flat land connecting the east and west parts of the island. This strip of land is 165 metres wide at its narrowest point and around 1 km long. Within that small space are over 100 hotels, guesthouses, and hostels, as well as hundreds of bars and restaurants. The streets are narrow and they get busy particularly in the evening time. If you stay right in the centre of Tonsai Village don’t expect to get a peaceful night’s sleep as the bars tend to carry on well past midnight.

Despite the overcrowding, Tonsai Village is in a beautiful location which you can only fully appreciate if you walk up to the viewpoints overlooking the village. On the south side of the village is Tonsai Bay which has dramatic sea cliffs. On the other side of the village is the 1.1 km long Loh Dalum Beach.
