About Travel to Koh Lanta
Located on the west coast in the south of Krabi Province, Koh Lanta is one of Thailand’s more laid back and family friendly tourist destinations. There’s not the same density of development in Koh Lanta as there is in Koh Samui, Phuket or Koh Phi Phi. Koh Lanta also has very little nightlife and much less anti-social behaviour than in other tourist hotspots in the country. For these reasons the island tends to be very popular with families as well as younger travellers looking for something different.

Koh Lanta Yai
Koh Lanta is the name for a collection of 52 islands. Nearly all the tourist accommodation, however, is located on the largest of these 52 islands, Koh Lanta Yai.
Koh Lanta Yai is 30 km long by 4 km kilometres, making it one of the larger islands in Thailand. The island has one large town, Baan Saladan, located on the north coast. Virtually all the beaches on Koh Lanta Yai are located on the west coast. The east coast of the island is much less developed as a consequence.
Beaches in Koh Lanta
There is an almost unbroken stretch of sandy beach running down the entire length of the west coast of Koh Lanta Yai. The west coast is often described as having 9 beaches, although not all guides agree what counts as a separate beach or a continuation of another beach.
The busiest, and longest, three beaches on Koh Lanta Yai are the ones located closest to Baan Saladan. These are:
- Klong Dao Beach
- Phra Ae Beach (Long Beach)
- Klong Khong Beach
All three beaches are popular with families, and all have plenty of accommodation, restaurants, bars, and small shops at the edge of the beach. Klong Khong Beach is the furthest away from Baan Saladan (9.2 km by road). The other two beaches are located within 5 km the island’s main ferry pier.
The further south you travel along the west coast the less busy the beaches become. The beaches at the southern end of the island are also much shorter and tend to be contained within small bays. Many visitors find these more southerly beaches more attractive than the beaches to the north. The reason they aren’t as popular is because they are further to reach and have far fewer facilities for visitors.
Two of the most beautiful beaches on Koh Lanta are Bamboo Beach and Ao Nui Beach:
- Bamboo Beach is 750 metres long and located 24 km by road from Baan Saladan. There are two resorts on Bamboo Beach.
- Ao Nui Beach is 260 metres long and located 21 km by road from Baan Saladan. There are no resorts on Ao Nui Beach, just one bar made from driftwood which is sometimes open and sometimes not.
Places to Visit in Koh Lanta
Both Koh Lanta Yai and Koh Lanta Noi, which is the smaller island to the north, are interesting places full of character. Mass tourism has not destroyed the local culture on the islands and much of the land on both islands is either used for agriculture, or not developed at all. The east coast of Koh Lanta Yai and much of Koh Lanta has large areas of pristine mangrove forest.
There are lots of different ways to explore Koh Lanta. Many tours are available, and you need to join a tour if you want to see the mangrove forests. A fairly high proportion of visitors, however, choose to rent a car or motorbike to travel around Koh Lanta Yai in particular. There is a road which goes around most of the coast line of Koh Lanta Yai which you can travel in a single day, seeing the main points of interest along the way.
Among the places to visit in Koh Lanta are:
- Koh Lanta Old Town (former main town)
- Mu Ko Lanta National Park (beach and walking trails)
- Tham Khao Mai Khew (small cave system)
- Baan Tae-Leng (historic ruined mansion in a scenic location)
- Khlong Chak Waterfall (located in the jungle 25 minutes walk from the road)
